Stock Returns 3D Surface Chart Maker

Use the Stock Returns 3D Surface Chart Maker to display a 3-dimensional chart of percent returns for all buy and sell combinations given a start and end date for any stock listed on a major U.S. stock exchange and supported by Quandl.

The 3D chart shows all returns for each buy price across all sell prices and all returns for each sell price across all buy prices.

The pattern of profitable and unprofitable returns on a 3D chart shows why buying at low prices makes sense and buying at high prices should be avoided.

Enter a valid stock symbol and select the price series and date information. Then click on the Display Chart button and the chart will be displayed on a new page.

Computational Notes:

A 3D chart with fewer than 50 prices is not too meaningful. The chart does not include enough returns to show distinctive returnl patterns. 3D charts with more than 1000 prices will be slow to display and will show a truncated area of returns. Daily prices add up quickly so avoid them for multi-year charts. Use monthly prices instead.

The computation of the number returns displayed on a 3D chart is:

     Number percent returns = (Number of prices * (Number of prices - 1 )) / 2

For example, a series of 100 prices generates 4,950 returns. One thousand prices generates 499,500 returns.

Each buy and sell percent return is computed as:

Percent return = ((Sell price - Buy Price) / Buy Price) * 100.

3D surface charts are drawn using ploty.js.
