One measure of a stock's volatility is the coefficient of variation, a standard statistical computation that is the quotient of the standard deviation of prices and the average price for a specified time period.

Coefficient of Variation = Standard Deviation / Average Price

The Stock Volatility Calculator uses closing prices for the last specified number of years for up to five quote symbols recognized by Yahoo! Finance. The calculator compares the coefficient of variation of the stock with the coefficient of variation of the S&P 500 (^GSPC).

Simply enter a valid quote symbol and click on the Calculate Results button. In a few seconds the coefficient of variation information will be displayed on a new page.
