Buy-and-Hold or Trade Calculator - See Which Plan Gives the Highest Returns

Use the Buy-and-Hold or Trade Calculator to compare how much money a buy-and-hold investment plan makes versus frequent trading.

The calculator displays a chart of dollar values for a selected price series interval, duration and amount invested for a given stock. The results for buy-and-hold and trading can vary greatly given different time intervals and durations.

Enter a valid stock symbol listed on a major U.S. stock exchange and supported by Quandl and select the price series and date information. Then click on the Calculate Returns button and the results will be displayed on a new page.

Prices from Quandl are adjusted for splits and dividends. Calculator does not support mutual funds or indexes. Returns using daily prices for multiple years could display slowly.

Computational Notes:

Buy-and-hold calculations for each date include:

number shares = amount invested / closing price for the first date

The amount invested is a one-time investment. The number of shares remains the same for each date.

Value = number shares * closing price for date

Trading calculations for each date include:

Value = ((amount invested / low price for the date) * high price for the next date) - amount invested

The same amount is invested for each date.

The values are added cumulative to give the cumulative value of trades for each date.

The chart on the next page displays the values of buy-and-hold and trade dates.

See Stock Trading Returns Tool for an analysis of different trading schemes.
