U.S. Market Indices Finish On the Upside In 2006

Most investors in the U.S. stock market made money in 2006. The Dow Jones Industrial Average, S&P 500, Nasdaq Composite and Russell 2000 finished up for the year.

For the Dow 82.95 percent of all buy and sell combinations based on daily closes made money. For the Nasdaq Composite only 58.14 percent of all buy and sell combinations were profitable. So investors in technology had to be better stock pickers than investors in the broader indices. The Russell 2000, an index of smaller stocks, gained the most for the year but only 64.15 percent of the buy and sell combinations made money.
